What should I do if I’m being blackmailed?

Practical steps if someone threatens to publish your images or information, or demands money or images.

What is happening is not your fault. The responsibility lies entirely with the person blackmailing you.

Right now

  1. Don’t pay and don’t send more images. Paying usually doesn’t stop blackmail, and they may ask for more.
  2. Don’t delete the conversation. Take screenshots showing the account name, its link and the date.
  3. Stop contact once you have documented, and don’t argue with them.
  4. Secure your accounts: change your passwords and turn on two-factor authentication.
  5. Report the account to the platform (Facebook, Instagram…). Platforms have special procedures for intimate images.

If intimate images were shared or are threatened

StopNCII.org lets you protect your images from being posted on many platforms without sending the image itself — only a “fingerprint” is created on your phone.

You are not alone

Talk to someone you trust and, if you feel in danger, call 1899. You can also ask for legal and psychological support.
