Online hate against women and LGBTQI+ people

Comments, campaigns or posts attacking you because you are a woman, or because of your identity or orientation. It is not “an opinion”, and you have the right to reject it.

How to recognise it

  • Insults or mockery about your gender, body, identity or orientation.
  • Calls for violence or to “teach you a lesson”.
  • Coordinated campaigns (many accounts at once) to silence you.
  • Your photo shared with degrading comments.

What to do

  1. You don’t have to read everything: let someone you trust help you sort and document.
  2. Document the posts and accounts, especially those with incitement or threats.
  3. Use platform tools: word filters, comment limits, restrict or block accounts.
  4. Report: platforms ban hate speech based on gender, identity and orientation.
  5. Take a break: temporarily deactivate or make your account private until things calm down.

If the attack includes threats of violence or exposes your personal information, see Someone is threatening me — what do I do?

Hate says something about the person writing it, not about you.
